The Lumen Grade
We evaluate software using an authoritative, transparent algorithm. No generic marketing fluff—just the technical "Why" behind the score.
1. The Three Pillars
Every tool is audited against three core technical vectors. These inputs form the baseline of the Lumen Grade.
Operational Depth
We evaluate the tool's ability to solve complex, solar-specific problems rather than generic workflows. We look for technical substance: LIDAR accuracy, bankable production modeling, VPP telemetry, and utility-grade structural engineering.
Scalability
We assess the infrastructure's capacity for enterprise volume. This involves auditing API maturity, bidirectional endpoints, multi-team workflow automation, and the openness of the platform's architecture.
Industry Consensus
A normalized meta-score derived from high-volume user data (G2, Capterra) to ensure market validation. We verify that a tool's technical excellence actually translates to ease-of-use and reliability in the field.
2. The Lens Pivot Logic
Not all software should be judged by the same rubric. We re-weight our three pillars based on the "DNA" of the tool—what we call its Lens.
Evaluates Deep Tech innovators building highly technical, single-pillar solutions.
Evaluates the foundational operating systems and connective tissue of a solar business.
Evaluates point solutions designed for speed, low-friction adoption, and immediate ROI.
3. Math in Action
Absolute traceability. See exactly how a typical score is calculated.
Example: Calculating a Specialist Tool
For a Deep Tech design tool scoring an 8.5 in Depth, 7.0 in Scale, and 9.0 in Consensus:
4. Performance Tiers
Absolute classification. We map technical authority to three clinical tiers to simplify high-stakes decision making.
Grade: 8.5 – 10.0
Institutional leaders distinguished by deep technical moats, NREL-validated physics engines, and enterprise-grade API maturity.
Grade: 7.6 – 8.4
Advanced systems designed for scaling SMBs. Characterized by stable interoperability, field-proven reliability, and high structural consensus.
Grade: ≤ 7.5
Foundational tools focused on speed, rapid adoption, and low-friction operational entry for emerging solar teams.
